The first details about Nintendo’s upcoming paid online service have been made available. Players will need a Nintendo account to register for the paid service, which as of yet does not have a stated price. However, it will be required to play multiplayer games online, just like on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The service is also required for online lobby & voice chat app, a monthly game download, and exclusive deals.
Each month subscribers can download one NES or SNES title, and the SNES titles will have online gameplay added. The voice chat app will “let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games – all from your smart device” This makes it sound like perhaps a party chat feature will be limited to the app, but I don’t believe that to be the case. It’s listed alongside “Online lobby,” so I expect all the same features will be available within the console itself.
Access to the eShop, adding friends, sharing screenshots, and access to parental controls are all free without paying for the online service. System and game updates are also to be made available to everybody.
