Though the pricing for the Nintendo Switch’s online component has yet to be revealed, we now know however that the online system will not use friend codes.

“The reality is, the way that online experiences have progressed, it’s an expensive proposition,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime while speaking with CNET. He then mentions, “The amount of servers we need to support Smash Brothers or Mario Kart — these big multiplayer games — is not a small investment.”

Fils-Aims then references the way in which contacts were made in the past and says, “There are no friend codes within what we’re doing.”

Nintendo recently detailed its online service which includes online gameplay, online lobby and voice chat via an app and more.
